Large field
The DOT is of a special construction with an open telescope on an open tower to minimize the local thermal disturbance of the air above and within the telescope, where the primary beam is coming to the primary mirror. This is the basis of the advanced capabilities for large-field high-resolution images, sharp over the whole field during hours for movies showing the dynamic processes on the sun.
Mosaics
Well suitable for the producing image mosaics because of its equatorial mount. Therefore there is no image rotation which eliminates the need for an image derotator. This in turn allows for less complicated optics in favor of better image quality and fast switching from sub-field to next sub-field.
Solar rim
Images and movies of fields at the solar rim are excellent due to the low telescope stray light. This is accomplished by a special optical design with only high quality optics.

In 2012 the Dutch Open Telescope Foundation was officially acknowledged as a public benefit organisation.
